Vendor Spotlight: DJ Drake

Drake Dawson, better known as DJ Drake, is one of Rembrandt Yard’s absolute favorite DJs because he always knows how to entertain guests no matter what type of celebration or what their musical style is.  We have seen him work weddings, proms, holiday parties, graduation parties, and even host his own wedding here at Rembrandt Yard.  He is a genuine person that is truly passionate about being a DJ, and it shows in every event he entertains.  We wanted to get to know him a little bit better, so we sat down to ask him a few questions about his business:

Tell us what you do, and how you got started:

I entertain people through music, lighting, and crowd participation.  I got started DJing at a local college bar where the the engineering students weren’t into dancing that much.  From that experience I  learned a lot on how to promote, entertain, and get the crowd involved.

What would you say makes you stand out from other DJs in the area?

My background in corporate America, in communications, customer service, and sales has helped my business leapfrog a lot of other more established DJ companies.  Staying organized, attuned to details and the client’s needs and keeping my ego out of the equation has helped a lot.

What inspires you?

The essence of music and what it does to inspire others.  I get inspiration from my client’s emotional connection to specific songs and enjoy mixing in their friend’s and family’s music to ensure everyone feels that their personality was thought of in the wedding.

What are some of your favorite event trends right now?

Creative lighting options whether they are market lights, uplighting, or ambient lighting.

What has been your most memorable event so far?

A very large wedding that brought together two very different families, but I had them dancing before dinner even started.  Then when I put on the Hora, all the Jewish family grabbed members of the other family and rushed the dance floor for some invigorated dancing.

What are other types of events you like to work besides weddings?

Themed events and parties where I get to work on a specific playlist of an era like 80s or a Grease-themed party.  It allows me to focus and surprise people with some fun remixes of the classics.

What’s next for DJ Drake?

I say “next”, but it is happening right now.  I just purchased new wireless, battery-operated LED lights which offer more flexibility and customization in lighting options.  It’s a steep learning curve, but my clients are going to love it when I add them to my set up soon.

What is something people might not know about you and your business?

I pride myself on creating the best experience for my clients, so I work on this full-time and continue to invest in the latest gear, music, and techniques.  On any given event, I may have over $10k worth of gear with me, and may have spent between 4-8 hours preparing a custom playlist.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Watch Netflix, hike, trail-running, and explore and browse thrift stores for hard-to-find CDs to complete my music collection.

What are three words that describe you as a person?

  1. Creative

  2. Entrepreneurial

  3. Easy-going

What is something you would want your clients to know?

Since becoming a full-time DJ, I understand most people’s perception of a DJ’s job, where one thinks “Oh, we can pay the DJ a couple hundred dollars and everything will be good.”  That might be the case for the hobbyist DJ, but if I could take everyone through a year in the life of a DJ, they would see the true value in what professional DJs must accomplish to sustain a successful business.  If you ever want to know and have a few extra hours, I’d be happy to fill you in!

Thank you Drake, it was great catching up with you!!
