Kaitlin Shea runs Kaitlin Shea Weddings & Events, a company dedicated to creating super original and memorable weddings. We wanted to know more about her and her company. Here’s the scoop.
Describe what your business does
Kaitlin Shea Weddings is a wedding and event planning company that specializes in curating out of the box weddings for creative couples.
How and when did your business get started?
I started my business in 2018 after 3 years of exploring the wedding industry. I started at a bridal salon, ended up interning and working for a planning company as well as a florist, and eventually branched off on my own.
What would you say makes you stand out from other similar vendors?
I would probably say a couple of things! For one, I love both the creative and organizational sides of planning. I went to school for art history so absolutely love helping couples bring their vision to life in the form of beautiful decor! At many of my 2019 weddings, I’ve also been told how calm I am is appreciated! There are a lot of moving parts on the wedding day so it’s easy to overreact if something goes wrong, but I try to keep my composure, work through the problem, and make sure the couple is (hopefully) blissfully unaware! 🙂
How I got into the industry also sets me apart a little bit! While I was engaged (for 2 years), I ended up in a treatment facility for an eating disorder and my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Both of these things opened my eyes to the fact that a wedding is so much more than a celebration, it’s an opportunity to be with loved ones, appreciate life and love, and put your best foot forward! Having my own wedding planner during my struggles inspired me to be there for others in a similar way! 🙂
What are some of your favorite wedding/event trends right now?
There are so many beautiful trends from geode cakes to an abundance of greenery to fun arches, but my favorite is when couples take a step away from the trends to think about what really reflects THEM! I’ve had couples convert community halls into beautiful event venues, create
their own breathtaking decor, & toss aside tradition in favor of something sentimental or unique! The little touches truly make the day in my opinion!
What has been your most memorable event?
That’s a tough one! One of the most memorable was probably at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science last fall. I’d be hard pressed to forget this day because it shared so many similarities with my own wedding day, plus the couple was incredible! The venue was the same, the bride and I shared a name, we wore the same designer, and even had the same final dance song!
What inspires you?
There are a lot of things that inspire me, but one of my biggest inspirations has to be my husband. He’s incredibly hard working, he supports me in every way, and even inspired me to join the wedding industry! We were high school sweethearts and got engaged in college which was my first introduction into the wonderful world of weddings! He’s been by my side through thick and thin and I wouldn’t trade his friendship for the world.
What is your number one tip for couples planning their wedding?
ENJOY YOURSELF! Make date days out of everything! Wedding planning is stressful at times but it’s a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together, think about your future, and truly understand one another before you start on the next phase of your life together.
What are other types of events you like to work for besides weddings?
Really, any sort of celebration! I’ve done a holiday party, a yoga event, a videography workshop, you name it! Weddings hold a very special place in my heart – but what I love most about my job is that every celebration is a beautiful one!
What are some interesting or unknown facts about you or your business?
Hmmm, I’m a one (wo)man band for the most part! I have assistants that can help me with setup, coordinating multiple locations, etc but if you hire me it’s me that you’ll be working with the entire time! Also – my employee of the month for 13 months running is my dog, Donald! 😉
What’s next for your business?
As a new wedding planning company, it’s hard to say! I know that 2020 is going to be incredible as I’ve got quite a few weddings and more workshops in the works, but other than that I plan to continue to evaluate what’s best for me and my clients and how to provide the best service possible to my couples!
What do you personally like to do in your free time?
I love to stay active – running is a great way to burn off wedding stress! 😉 I also love to do anything creative (baking, crafting, classes, etc) and spend time with my family and friends! Oh, and I have a tarantula!
What are three words that describe you as a person?
Optimistic, excitable, dedicated.
What is your favorite hang out spot in Boulder?
Probably Pearl Street Mall….or Rembrandt Yard! 😉
What is your favorite outdoor activity in Colorado?
Definitely hiking – there are a million out of this world scenic hiking spots, Boulder included! That or hanging out by the pool –
did I mention I have an engagement ring floatie?
What are you up to on a snowy day in Colorado?
Staying inside! I’m a Summer girl all the way – I’d be happy if it only snowed during the holidays!
What are some of your favorite foods?
Tacos, ice cream, pizza, all the healthy stuff 😉
Anything else you would like to add?
Just that I am so grateful to all of my couples! I know that your wedding day is likely one of the most important days of your life and to be trusted with an occasion like that is incredible! I take great pride in my work and getting to know my couples as individuals and a pair! 🙂
